5 Essential Self-Care Tips for Busy Moms:
A Psychotherapist's Guide

Being a mom is one of the most rewarding experiences in life and one of the most challenging. From juggling the constant demands of parenting, work, household chores and relationships, us moms have a lot on our plates. With so much to do and so many competing demands, it can be super easy to put our own needs on the backburner.

I get it and I know plenty of other moms that get it too. We’ve all been there. I’m here to remind you that taking care of yourself is so crucial to your well-being AND it can actually make you a better mom. Now that’s a win-win.

In this blog post, we'll explore some practical self-care strategies that can help you reduce stress, increase your energy levels, and improve your overall quality of life. I know sometimes it can seem overwhelming to take time out for yourself, like there just isn’t any time at all. I’m here to say, trust me, YOU are worth it.

  1. Prioritize sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for physical and mental health. However, many moms struggle to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night due to caring for their children. To prioritize sleep, try to establish a consistent bedtime routine for both you and your kids. This can help signal to your body that it's time to wind down and prepare for sleep.

2. Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is a powerful tool for reducing stress and increasing feelings of calm and relaxation. As a mom, it can be easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget to be present in the moment.

I love this tip because it honestly doesn’t take much, if any, time. In fact, slowing down and being mindful will actually give you time back. Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated, you don’t need a special app (it can help though). It can be as simple as closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. You can mindfully cook dinner, noticing the smells and the textures of the food, the sounds of the oil in the pan etc.

3. Be active

We all know exercise is important for physical health and mental health. As a mom though, it can be challenging to find the time for exercise, it can feel like another thing on your already, busting at the seams to-do list. Again, don’t make it complicated, even a short walk around the block can help boost your mood and energy levels. Running after your toddler or chasing your kid on their bike totally counts! Maybe try doing a quick few stretches during your kid’s nap time or your lunch break at work.

4. Social Connection

Us humans are social creatures, we thrive on connection. Especially during covid, I know many moms felt isolated and disconnected and now that covid has subsided, it can be hard to break out of the rut and socialise. Look for local moms groups, moms and bubs yoga, have lunch with a colleague, chat with a mom at the park. Finding little points of connection in your day can really increase your resilience to handle the tough moments.

5. Take breaks

As a mom, it can be easy to feel like you need to be constantly "on", always taking care of others first. Taking breaks is so essential for recharging your own batteries and reducing stress levels. Try to schedule regular breaks throughout your day, even if it's just a few minutes to sit quietly and drink a cup of tea. Or maybe it’s a pause to take 3 deep breaths before you respond to your crying baby or screaming toddler.

Say it with me - self-care is not selfish!! It’s a necessary ingredient to being a healthy, present and connected mom. Showing up for yourself also teaches your kids to show up for themselves.

By prioritizing sleep, practicing mindfulness, staying active, connecting with others, and taking breaks, you can reduce stress, increase your energy levels, and improve your overall quality of life. As a psychotherapist, I highly recommend incorporating these self-care strategies into your daily routine.
